C5A lifespan far short of plans cited by Air Force
Air Force Secretary Robert Seamans says the C5A freight plane has a 7000 hour structural life far below the planned 90000 hours and is being flown sparingly to extend use. A GAO study released by Rep. Aspin and Long cites 12994 equipment failures, 3827 in landing gears, with 14 major deficiencies impairing missions and 149 minor ones.

Army sees 10 more years before a new tank is ready
Washington based report details a 10 year, $100 million MBT program that was scrapped after costs ballooned. Army witnesses told a House Appropriations subcommittee that a substitute tank would still need eight to 10 years and unknown millions, provoking sharp questions from members about delaying readiness. The M50 tank remains the current workhorse with planned upgrades.

Air Force Fisswingwing engine cost rise and Navy split
The Air Force would spend an extra 500 million on the Fisswingwing engine after the Navy blocked shared costs by keeping the engine in the F14. Navy officials said they prefer the already developed engine to deliver the F14 sooner. The Army estimates 8 to 10 years for a new U S main battle tank, a successor to the joint U S West Germany program that was scrapped after 10 years. The Air Force also plans to move flying command centers from 707s to jumbo Boeing jets.
