FDA bans popular coloring Violet No 1
The FDA declared Violet No 1 a potential cancer risk and banned its use effective April 10. No recalls will occur for products already on the market. About 30 percent of Violet No 1 goes to the federal meat inspection program for grade stamps. Beginning April 11 USDA graders switch to yellow orange and green colors. The ban follows two Japanese rat studies suggesting carcinogenic potential.
