New Life for Mars Seaplane Brings Firefighting Role
The Martin Mars flying boats, among the largest seaplanes, found a second life as forest fire water bombers in British Columbia. Retired in 1958, the four surviving giants were repurposed by Forest Industries Flying Tankers Ltd, each carrying 6,000 gallons in large tanks. They skim lakes to fill, scoop up water at about a ton per second, then release it through 16 by 16 foot doors to douse fires over areas up to 550 feet long.
