Jazz Mass at Norwalk Church Stirs Mixed Reactions
In St Paul’s Church Norwalk Connecticut a four piece jazz quartet performed the Twentieth Century Folky Mass by Geoffrey Beaumont. Rector Rev Anthony Treasure led a conservative Anglican parish through a modern service aimed at showing youth that religion isn’t old fashioned. Musicians from Stamford played in dark suits as the Kyrie Agnus Dei and Gloria fused with Latin beguine and four beat rhythms. Congregants—ranging from an advertising director to a high school student—offered varied reactions as they left to Norwalk Green.
