Board Deadlock Halts County Takeover of RTD
The board split 22 to block a plan for the county to run the Southern California Rapid Transit District. Baxter Ward and Kenneth Hahn urged five supervisors to become RTD directors, while Pete Schabarum and James Hayes opposed. The issue is postponed two weeks hoping Ernest Debs returns to cast a deciding vote. Hahn criticized RTD spending while Ward had pushed condemning SP lines for mass transit use. Schabarum floated state DOT planning control for highways and mass transit.
