Nixon Signs New Anti Pollution Law on Water
President Nixon signed a new anti pollution law to make oil and shipping firms pay for oil spill cleanup in most cases. It would bar pleasure boats from discharging sewage into waters and curb nuclear plant discharges. The measure, seen as a breakthrough after coastal spills, imposes liability up to 14 million dollars for tanker or platform spills, with a 5 million dollar emergency fund pending settlements.
