Chavez signs first table grape grower contracts in California drive
Cesar Chavez announced three union contracts in his bid to organize California table grape workers. Two growers signed with a third in negotiations in the Coachella Valley as the AFL CIO United Farm Workers seeks more growers to join and widen the boycott. The three-year deals include a 6 to 10 cent hourly rise, 1.75 per hour base plus per-box bonus, health and welfare dues, and pesticide safeguards with DDT banned. The effort involves David Freedman Co and Wander Palms Ranch in India and Travertine Ranch in Oasis, with the latter’s owner ill. The agreements aim to pressure broader participation amid resistant Desert Grape Growers League.

Dynamite for 24 Cents Exposes Easy Explosives Purchases
A UPI report describes buying dynamite in Michigan for 24 cents a stick with no age or identity checks, contrasting store practices with strict handgun sale rules and noting state probes into explosives regulation. California sales also reach a record 3.8 billion dollars in late 1969. Eleven proposed Michigan bills to tighten control failed in committee or were vetoed, with officials urging action. Meantime weapons and explosives remain readily accessible to adults without proof of purpose.
