A child narrator recalls a temperance meeting in a rural church. An elderly former drinker, the tavern-keeper, and a pastor confront new anti liquor views, culminating in a dramatic pledge scene. The old man reveals a tragic drink‑driven past, including theft, abuse, and a loss, and seeks redemption for his family and community.
Mapisox October 7 1856 veto message to the Senate objects to a land grant rail bill. It cites two private local incorporations Wisconsin and Michigan Railroad Co and La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad Co, arguing the measure violates state constitution by combining separate subjects. The veto notes land grants between Madison and Lake Superior Bayfield to La Crosse and Milwaukee Co with ten year tax exemption and no market sale provisions.
The speech warns that land donations should be marketed quickly to settlers, not hoarded by speculators, and objects to congressional grants being controlled by a single railroad entity. It opposes granting broad consolidation powers to the La Crosse and Milwaukee railroad, arguing for diversified ownership to prevent monopoly and protect state interests.
