A woodman on a cold day finds a snake hidden in his firewood. He and his family feel warmth, then the serpent strikes a child with a fang. A sudden blaze erupts as he curses pity, ending with a grim warning and a dark recap of trust betrayed. The speaker, Antex Gravy, adds a note about being found in a cell and warmed, then addressed to Konach. Do not sing the hand that gave to lie.
In a May parlor scene Mr Theophilus Tims seeks a dinner with friend Ralph Rattle, while his wife Louisa pressures him to abandon the plan. Her quiet manipulation reshapes his stance, leading to a battle of will that ends with an uneasy, abiding union. Louisa’s control and Theophilus’s softened stance define their married life.
A fragment notes one figure yielding to a woman’s notions and paying a slight tribute in tense affection. He remains unaware he is among the humblest subjects of Petticoat Governs.
A miner recalls a near fatal blast with Jake pea in which a safety fuse fizzed while lowering the blast. After being pulled from the shaft the Major finds his hair has turned snow white, a change he vows no dye can reverse. The tale blends danger, humor, and rough camaraderie from the mine.
A long satirical pondering notes young men dressed as princes and the temptations of cigars brandy theater balls and fashionable habits. It mocks lavish spending and asks if a clerk or groom can sustain a life of such pleasures while neglecting duties and payments including reading a weekly newspaper.
