Amison Guards Described As Fearsome Female Troop
The West African Herald extols an all female unit called the Amison Guards. The 8,000 women are portrayed as fearless, bloodthirsty and highly disciplined, armed with varied weapons and capable of brutal warlike acts. An old Army officer from Chambersburg comments on General Scott’s cautious yet determined campaign. Elsewhere, a humorous anecdote from Chicago Journal recounts Zouaves mistaking a calf for beef leading to a fatal misfire and a mistaken meal.
