River Route Prospect for a Midwestern Rail Link
In 1856 Prescott Wisconsin and Hastings Minnesota host a railroad meeting to evaluate a line from the Big Bend of the Minnesota River to Hastings and Prescott. Supporters argue the river route via the Mississippi offers the best outlet for grain, stock, and trade, linking Madison and Columbus to St Croix ports.
Prescott Hastings Rail Link Proposed to Connect Northwest
The meeting urged building the Madison and Prescott Railroad and a branch to South Bend to connect the Northwest with New York and the Great Lakes. Hastings Minnesota and Prescott Wisconsin are named in the enterprise with an executive committee appointed to pursue steps. The gathering adjourned to Prescott on July 10 as reports note the steamer trip and local property news.
