Boots for the President in Smithburgh
A traveler recounts a reception by Smithburgh locals after buying boots stamped Franklin Pierce. The town hails him as a visiting “excellency,” holds a jovial breakfast in his honor, and packs the tavern with officials and citizens. He departs amid cheers, surprised by the day’s bold local pageantry.
