Deacon’s Clever Lesson Turns Boy Into Wiser Child

A Maine Deacon known for dry humor scolds his son John after a school whipping. The boy retaliates under his father’s “don’t let a woman whip you” rule, learns a harsh lesson when punished at school, and returns chastened. A second tale shows an editor unknowingly printing a critic’s severe piece signed with the critic’s own name, prompting surprise at the outcome. A mother’s Sunday school anecdote ends with a child suggesting Cain fled to New York.
