Pierre Pitois Deserted Before Battle and the Emperors Intervention
In 1305 Pierre Pitois, sergeant of the twelfth regiment, begged for leave to visit his dying mother, was denied, and later deserted as his unit prepared to march into Austria. He was condemned to death, but the Emperor halted the execution and urged him to die for France rather than for himself, revealing his mother's memory and a blue forget me not kept as a talisman. The tale ends with the Emperor’s plea and Pierre’s eventual fate tied to his country.
