Douglas Speech on Lecompton Kansas Slavery Controversy in Senate
In the Senate on December 9 1857 Stephen A Douglas critiques the Presidents Kansas Lecompton policy arguing the administration failed to endorse the Lecompton constitution and that Kansas should submit every clause to a popular vote. He condemns forced adoption of a constitution with slavery provisions and defends popular sovereignty for territorial self government.
