Union or Republican Fusion Debate in Civil War Era

A discussion argues that a union of Republicans and Democrats may form on a platform of unqualified support for the administration during the war, but only if it preserves party identities. It warns that current sentiment in several states favors keeping parties intact, while urging caution about any fusion efforts and noting a dispatch from Governor Raxpeann and a St Louis martial law proclamation.

Hampton Burned by Confederate Forces in Virginia

The Virginian under Gen Magruder reenacted Moscow on a small scale by burning Hampton to deny use as winter quarters for a Federal army. General Butler’s reduced garrison left Hampton, enabling Magruder to strike and destroy the town. The episode echoes the destruction at Harper's Ferry as attributed to Virginia's own army.
