A Wife Show Drift From a Once Popular Custom at Summer Garden
The article recalls a traditional Summer Garden wife show where tradespeople and families dressed in elaborate attire to attract grooms. It describes crowds, soldiers, and diverse costumes, noting two young sisters as prime candidates and detailing a courting ritual led by an older relative. The piece ends by warning the custom is fading, with only about half the usual number of candidates this year and decline expected to continue.
