The Successful Culture of Hay in the South

A. D. McNair argues hay is undervalued in the Southern states. Arkansas and Louisiana yield little farm income from hay, yet El Dorado farmers note hay can fetch about 80 cents a bale or 24 a ton. With a mowing machine at hand, a single team can harvest 8 to10 acres in four days yielding 10 to 30 tons, enough for a cotton farmer's yearly needs. The piece also notes hay can be grown alongside cotton without sacrificing corn or other crops and urges adopting improved seed and legume rotations to boost yields.

Profitable corn and hay crops for diverse soils

The guide compares Bermuda grass Cowpeas Redtop and Lespedeza with notes on Alfalfa. Bermuda grass yields well on fair land and is good for hay. Cowpeas provide both hay and grain, though curing is tricky. Redtop suits waterlogged low lands, Lespedeza yields 1-3 tons per acre on prepared land, versatile for low and hill sites. Alfalfa thrives on buckshot soils with liming and inoculation.
