May 5 Ookla reports a storm near Ardcore causing massive disruption. Telegraph office remained open overnight as operators attempted to confirm damages and evacuation details. Haileyville wires indicate the system worked, though no material damage yet confirmed.
The legislature met with the Senate taking a day off while the House advanced measures. A racing bill passed, the Wadley bill for Garland and Phil Hickson counties was read, and the state hospital and normal school appropriations were approved. The rail tariff debate continued, with freight rate changes and injunctions discussed, and many items carried to June.
The Arkansas Railroad Commission yesterday heard extensive argument on a rail matter. Attorneys for involved parties presented positions as officials debated the implications and possible actions for state rail policy.
Little Rock May 6 Governor Donaghey is expected to announce the men who will serve on the new State Capitol Commission. He has reportedly selected choices and will confirm them with the Senate before adjournment. One named is De A. Be Moore long associated with the Auditor's office.
In Fort Smith on May 6 the Arkansas Federation of Women’s Clubs presented a report by Mrs. duo Fletcher on waterways and state navigation measures. Samuel J. Record spoke on state forestry with lantern slides. An evening music program featured Mrs. Frank Read with William Worth Bailey. The Carnegie library art exhibit showcased drawing, painting, needle work, weaving, pottery and bookbinding with prizes planned for each category.
A shoemaker advertises continued service near the post office offering shoe repairs saddle mending and harness tightening at fair prices with contact via phone.
Detlueen May 5 fire destroyed the pine saw mill of the Dierks Lumber and Mill Company. Loss exceeds $50,000, largely covered by insurance. Hardwood mill and yard largely spared. About 200 workers will be out of employment until rebuilding is complete.
Helena prepares for a five day May festival beginning May 6 with state wide promotion and railroad cooperation promising large crowds. Madrid features, conventions, arrival shows, and thousands of dollars in decorations and costumes mark the build up. May 14 is Kik's Day, also May Queen's Day and Hospital Tag Day.
May 6 Hot Springs. Directors renew a condition tied to renewing their chapter and expect to begin building on the Mena line within a year after a recent conference. The move follows strong western demand, with three roads headed to Hot Springs including Rock Island and Little Rock and Hot Springs Western. Building on De Queen and Eastern and Memphis, Paris and Gulf lines progresses, and MP&G stockholders meet soon to decide the Murfreesboro eastern extension. Superintendent Chis W. Dodson, a Hot Springs native, oversees the project.
George W. Donaghey sent a special message to the legislature recommending an appropriation of 10000 dollars to buy a silver service or token of appreciation for the battleship to bear the name Arkansas. He notes the state’s honor in naming the ship and the launch likely before the next assembly in 1911.
A fragmentary text proposes appointing a commission to oversee the honor, arrange for the purchase of the office, and manage the details of the presentation. The wording indicates formal approval and delegation of duties to implement the recognition and related logistics.
Carrie Nation plans a final temperance action in North Arkansas against a nearby distillery near her rural retreat two miles northeast of Ape na Arkansas. She states she will use cooperative pressure to shut it down while continuing her Chautauqua circuit and temperance efforts and donating excess earnings to orphans.
Mrs J Kress and J d Kre general manager of the Gurdon and Fort Smith railroad delivered clothing bedding and 52 dollars from Gurdon for tornado sufferers at Caddo Gap. The Relief Committee reports the distress is abating and aid is in place.
The Nevada Chancery Court, meeting in June, will decide ownership of the Artesian church property located five miles west of Prescott. The land of about thirty acres was deeded to the Cunber land Presbyterian church in 1855. A union followed but a large faction retained the property and this suit seeks to resolve title while both sides continue to use the building. The Cumtherlands still collect rents from the land used for farming.
Little Rock defeated New Orleans to seize first in the Southern League pennant race. Folbre of Forrest City beat New Orleans 3 to 2 in game one as New Orleans used Bartley and Fritz. Wart starred for the Travelers in game two with a fifth inning single that drove in two runs. Farmers visiting this week praise crop prospects amid favorable weather. some districts report wind and hail damage elsewhere in the region.
