An 1898 era reminiscence recalls heroic fighting by Spaniards against American steel ships. The writer details the Manila crisis, naval losses and captures in vivid, period voice, noting Spanish actions, hospital scenes, and proclamations as hostilities flare between Spain and the United States.
Two white bandits boarded the New York and St. Louis express near Pittsburgh and overpowered the express messenger. They seized four sealed bags of currency and fled near Walker's Station, eleven miles west. The amount taken is not yet known. The robbery halted the train, with officials issuing reports from Pittsburgh and Steubenville.
Los Angeles May 2. Attorney O A Widaman and A P Sanger were arrested on a charge of attempted murder after a pistol shot in a hotel room. Dr W M Bell, an occupant, says the men tried to force him to sign a deed transferring his $100,000 of property to his wife, and the suspects acted under the influence of Sanger and Vidaman. Bell also claims estrangement from his wife due to their machinations and notes Bell owns substantial El Paso property.
The Evening World claimed former President Grover Cleveland was suffering from cancer of the stomach with hopeless prognosis after expert consultation. Cleveland remained at Lakewood's Lakewood Hotel in New Jersey where family members visited. officials later denied any grave change in his condition and said he was improving.
May 2 Hongkong reports a fragmentary note that the American government accepted an area for a repaired fleet to bias a route around the world. The wording suggests a maritime context with a focus on placement or movement of fleet resources.
In Washington on Friday Senator Jefferson Davis denounced trusts and the press during debate on his bill to suppress trusts. He condemned plutocracy and pledged to defend organized labor and the yeomanry, signaling a confrontation with the press as “servants of greed.”
Birmingham May 2 Alabama leaders of the Independence league met in convention and chose twenty two delegates for the Chicago national convention. A resolution opposing fusion with any Democratic or Republican candidate was adopted. Andy Marx presided with J B Drake as secretary. Former Congressman M W Howard of Fort Payne aided discussion.
