Bankers See Progress on Wilson Currency Plan

Two bankers from St Louis and New Orleans who met with President Wilson and others returned to New York and reported progress toward removing objectionable features in the currency bill. They expect no changes to political control or note issuance, noting Bryan’s stance. They foresee elastic currency and a first head with broad authority, plus ongoing appointment confidence.

Imperator Lies Trail Opens In Palmer Impersonator Case

Washington June 28 The senate lobby committee began examining a man who posed as Representative A Mitchell Palmer of Pennsylvania. He allegedly discussed with Lewis Cass Ledyard securing Wall Street influence to halt investigations and lawsuits and to aid clients in Washington. Palmer testified he suspects the impersonator’s identity but kept silent. Ledyard later met Edward Lauterbach who claimed to represent the mysterious caller. Lauterbach spoke of influence with top Washington officials. Palmer said the impersonator boasted backing from leading Democratic figures, including a Speaker and a House majority leader. The committee will hear from Lauterbach and others, and may summon additional New York figures. The inquiry also touched on a bid to employ Lauterbach for Union Pacific-Southern Pacific litigation, which both Lauterbach and Representative Riordan denied. The panel plans further hearings with other New York lawyers and bankers. Meanwhile in London the Duke of Sutherland has died. Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, born 1851, owned vast estates in Europe and substantial properties in Britain and abroad.
