Nevada farmer killed by lightning

Jim Wheat, about 34, a farmer near Rosston, was struck by lightning yesterday at 5:40 PM and instantly killed. His young daughter nearby was knocked unconscious. Survived by wife and three children. Heavy rains and violent thunderstorm accompanied the incident. no further details available.

Urge coal dealers to order supply now

Little Rock June 27 The Arkansas Railroad Commission issues a warning urging all retail coal dealers to immediately order next winter’s coal and urge customers to take direct delivery. The notice cites national defense measures and warns of possible coal shortages as fall and winter shipments rise.

Washington Wins Hempstead County Seat Battle

Hope and Washington fought over a 1914 removal election in Hempstead county. Judge W. H. Evans ruled Washington won by about 250 to 300 votes, after 1300 DeRoan township depositions were read. Hope attorneys planned appeals to the Arkansas Supreme Court, with a stay of removal possible.

Uniformity Text Books Will Save 20 Percent

Little Rock June 27 It is estimated that the total annual school book bill of the state for the first eight grades is 175000 dollars and the recent state adoption will save about 20 percent of this amount or 35000 dollars The statement shows how the saving was achieved in Arithmetic two weeks present price under county uniformity state adoption 77 cents Agricultural text books 75 cents and 60 cents Physiology two books 120 and 90 cents History 1 and 70 cents Geography two books 1190 and 136 State Superintendent Bond notes one protest by Macmillan representative over geography adoption not well founded

County committees report a total of 4,727 dollars raised for the Red Cross. Subscriptions progress slowly, with criticism that the initial committee under Mayor Hamby could have boosted totals if started earlier. Previous total recorded 3,757 dollars. Arkansas National Guard Third Regiment Organized

Little Rock reports the Third Regiment of the Arkansas National Guard near completion with Capt Lane inspecting companies. Col. E. L. Compere and Lt Col Raleigh M. Pearson named, and several majors appointed. Daily payroll at the new military camp expected to reach about $50 000 when under way.
