Rain breaks drought and saves crops across Midwest
From Indiana Illinois Arkansas and Missouri reports say heavy rain ends drought in two inch totals at Chester Illinois and Belleville Illinois while several counties including Macoupin Montgomery and Morgan in Illinois receive rain that protects corn and hay crops. Indiana weather bureau puts tens of thousands of dollars value on recent rain as it saves grain crops from burning.

Record Rain Eases Missouri Drought Hurting Oats
Predictions of corn and wheat yields were common though oats ran below normal. In northeast Missouri nearly an inch of rain since Saturday relieved drought, helped corn and grass, but many farmers regret shipping cattle. A heavy downpour at Bismarck broke a seven week drought, rain cooled temperatures and spared corn while oats and early potatoes suffered. In Decatur drought eased with over an inch of rain saving the corn crop though fields were not fully planted or up yet.

Vandalia Illinois reports beneficial showers ending a two month drought and aiding corn and pastures though oats and hay were not helped. Similar rains spread to Virden and nearby counties. In Arkansas heavy rain lifted crop stress as cotton needs eased. A lightning strike killed C G Hawley and injured five others, burning three nearby houses.

Nine Drowned as Survey Boat Capsizes on Mississippi
Nine of 14 crew members aboard the U S survey boat Beaver drowned when the vessel capsized five miles north of New Madrid Missouri during a squall. Three survivors swam ashore and two were rescued from wreckage as searchers recovered only one body, that of chief engineer C S Williamson. Bodies of the eight remaining crew members were being sought near Snakey Bend and Hodgkiss light with government boats aiding dawn patrols. Williamson's body was to be sent to Mason Ohio after initial handling by New Madrid Masonic lodge.

Mrs Dave Grant of Beach area discovers her two sons aged 4 and 7 dead in bed with a rattlesnake between them. Authorities believe the snake crawled into the bed clothes during the day while the boys were aired outside. The boys had complained of pinching each other the previous evening.
