Governor Grants First Pardon in Six Months Office Tenor

Governor McRae issued his first clemency after more than six months in office. M. J. Jackson, sentenced to ten years for second degree murder in 1911, had escaped, lived on Island No. 32, and was pardoned after broad support from judges, prosecutors, officials, jurors, and 157 citizens. Jackson, 66, in poor health, faced return to prison before public appeal.

Arkansas National Guard unit organized at Pine Bluff

C Company of the Arkansas National Guard, organized February 21 1921 by Captain Carroll Cone in Pine Bluff, reports federal recognition and 81 members with aim to reach 150. The unit drills one hour weekly, pays a $10,000 annual payroll, and plans competitive drill at Hope on July 4 with football prospects for next season and an encampment at Camp Pike on July 11 for training and experience.

Hope will host a large Fourth of July event with a mammoth parade of ex service men in uniform, hundreds of decorated cars, and a big basket dinner at Fair Park. Governor McRae and General Lewis will speak, with contests, athletic events, and a grand fireworks display by North American Fireworks Co. at night.

Missing Carroll A Deering crew searched worldwide

Washington reports a worldwide search by the State Department through American consuls for the missing crew of the Bath Maine schooner Carroll A Deering. The inquiry involves the Justice and Commerce Departments, alongside the Hewitt disappearance. the Deering's last signal and later bottle message hint possible foul play and crew hidden aboard. Citizens Army Support Endorses National Guard Reorganization

McRae backs War Department plans for National Guard and Organized Reserve reorganization. Weeks sends letter inviting cooperation to develop this component of the citizens army. Act of June 4 1920 edits the National Defense Act to combine regular army National Guard and Organized Reserves. First mobilization forms six field armies with mixed federal and state units.
