Persistent reports from Kanark Oil Company near Rosston indicate an oil prospect at 2,800 feet in the county. Straughan directs operations and believes production is likely as drill cuttings show paraffin. depth at noon was 2,445 feet.
The labor commissioner found 150 men seeking work in the Western harvests on Monday morning. Many applicants were black, while employers in Texas, Kansas and Omaha demand white workers only. In recent weeks about 500 men have been placed with the help of commerce bets at Texar and Newport.
Special to The News Little Rock June 21 Major James J. Harrison directs a 100 member central committee forming the Forward Education Movement. Leading state figures join, including C. S. Fitzpatrick of Helena, former Arkansas Bankers Association president, and Garland Hunt of Newport who served in France urging broad support for educational progress.

Mrs. Margaret E. Fosdick of the YWCA announces the national board accepted Governor McRae's invite to host the next annual YWCA convention in Hot Springs. She notes the June vote was favorable and expresses thanks for the courtesy and anticipation of the gathering in Arkansas.

Wiley D. Burke 65 a noted planter of Emmet route 1 was struck by lightning while picking beans with his wife in their field yesterday afternoon around 6. He died instantly and is survived by his wife two sons William and Luther one sister and eleven brothers. Funeral services will be held at Holly Grove cemetery tomorrow afternoon conducted by Rev B L Durham of Emmet with interment following.
Little Rock June 21. Counsel for the Elaine negroes may appeal to federal courts for relief possibly to the Supreme Court if a federal question can be found. Arkansas Supreme Court ruled chancery court lacks jurisdiction over criminal procedure, leaving Governor McRae to fix the date for six negroes' electrocut ion unless superseded by a federal writ.
The Arkansas Railroad Commission with experts and special counsel traveled to Memphis yesterday to begin the Interstate Commerce Commission hearing on the Memphis rate cases. Fort Smith hosted testimony earlier last week. The process is expected to last three or four weeks, marked as one of the commission's most exhaustive cases.
Washington June 20 The Senate post roads committee backs federal highway act arguing highways lower living costs strengthen defenses and foster nationalism Three Democrats Watson McKellar Heflin will file a minority report noting 60 percent of Agriculture funds go to roads risking misaligned agricultural goals and potential interstate disruption.
Washington June 20 The soldiers bonus bill with a five way plan endorsed by the American Legion was favorably reported today by the Senate finance committee. There was no opposition in committee though some senators reserved right to amend in the Senate. Provisions include cash bonus or adjusted service pay deferred payments service certificates vocational training aid farm and home aid and land settlement aid.
The Pulaski county grand jury calls for the removal of Justin Matthews as assessor for the Little Rock Spring Lake district and requests his severance from all Pulaski road districts. He serves as assessor for two districts and sits on boards for North Little Rock and Galloway districts and the Broadway Main Street bridge. The panel also urges cancellation of surfacing contracts for the Spring Lake highway and postponement of proposed additional district assessments.
Denver June 20 John L Lewis president United Mine Workers announced his candidacy for the presidency of the American Federation of Labor opposing Samuel Gompers. Lewis said his name would be submitted. Gompers vowed to seek re election. The move drew excitement as Lewis leads the UMWA with 4257 votes and union allies including Carpenters and Joiners and rail unions reportedly backing him. The Machinists told delegates not to vote for Gompers.
Little Rock June 21 The 145th Arkansas supreme court report is now being distributed. This volume prepared by T D Crawford supreme court reporter contains the opinions of the court delivered from July 1920 to November 1920. Another volume is in press and Crawford hopes three additional volumes will publish before reconvening after the summer recess. It has been many years since the reports were up with the court.
The report states the committee approved only enough work to render the road passable at this time, avoiding extensive reconstruction or additional improvements.
