President calls for volunteers for war service week

Washington reports President Wilson issued a proclamation designating June 23 to 30 as recruiting week for the regular army. Unmarried men aged 18 to 40 with no dependents were urged to enroll to help reach a wartime force of about 800,000. The action aims to speed recruitment after slow daily numbers and fill a remaining shortfall of roughly 71,000 troops.

British Shipping Losses Rise In Teuton Submarine Attacks

London reports 27 British ships over 1,600 tons sunk this week, with five under 1,600 tons also destroyed. No fishing vessels were lost. The tally marks the highest weekly British losses since late April, part of a continued surge in German submarine warfare.

Red Cross Subscriptions For Nevada County War Relief

A city committee led by Mayor Randolph P. Hamby organized to solicit Red Cross War Relief Fund subscriptions. Nevada County aims for 20 000 dollars with early canvassing yielding 927 dollars by noon and plans to push toward thousands tomorrow. Numerous individual donors are listed with amounts from 1 to 150 dollars.

Gala Day for Prescott July 4 1917 Parade and Picnic

Prescott plans a grand 4th of July celebration with a parade featuring a float for every business, band concerts, a tennis match, and an old-time basket dinner. The Home Guard will drill and march, business houses close, and residents urged to bring baskets of victuals for a community feast.

Nevada Council of Defense organizes amid WWI effort

The Arkansas State Council of Defense sent a committee to Nevada to form a County Council of Defense. C. B. Andrews was elected president and F. J. Johnson secretary. Committees named cover executive, finance, sanitation, food supply, labor, military, state protection, Boys' Working Reserve, and industrial survey with numerous local appointees and officers.
