New York June 20 There was a sharp advance in the cotton market with October futures hitting 13.18¢ a pound or about $2 a bale above last week’s levels. The close was 13.17¢ and the list firm up 22 to 27 points. Traders cited Liverpool buying, strong Southern spot values, and wary new crop progress as drivers.
The hearing on the Caldwell and Drake contract for the state capitol resumed in Little Rock on June 21 before the Board of Arbitration. George W. Caldwell of Indianapolis arrived to testify, with the main claim on the former contractors to be followed by Capitol Commission evidence for the state.
Little Rock. On June 21 the Bank Commissioner asked the court for an order to finalize distribution of funds to depositors and creditors of the Bank of Higdon. Final distribution will be under 25 percent as all assets have been realized and 25 percent already paid.
Little Rock on June 21 1909 1509 more signatures are needed before June 30 to file with Secretary of State Earle W Hodges. Petition must reach 8 percent of ballots cast in last general election totaling 550 to be effective. An order calls a state reunion of the Sons of Confederate Veterans for June 26 in Little Rock to outline work for the year and select a State Commander. There are eight camps in the state, with plans to greatly increase their number during the year.
Circulation of petitions to introduce a bill repealing statewide prohibition and establishing Ohio style local option begins in Little Rock and Argenta. More than 300 names collected in Argenta. activists aim to reach 14,000 by July 7 to place the measure on November ballots. Prohibition groups warn of a tough fight. campaign led by Ben L. Griffin with ties to Judge L. C. Smith. The proposed local option would limit saloons to one per 1,000 residents in larger towns, ban in towns under 500, regulate hours 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and close on Sundays. Petitions circulated in Argenta by Salic and Nathan Gershner, ex-saloon owners.
In Little Rock on June 21 the Vanderbilt Alumni Association of Arkansas began a campaign to raise 10,000 to add to the university endowment. The university was offered 300,000 if another 300,000 was raised, with the Vanderbilt family contributing 400,000 to reach 1,000,000. Arkansas committee heads are W. L. Hemingway and J. B. Webster, with initial subscriptions including 1,000.
Washington reports the 1915 U S cotton crop at 11,191,820 equivalent 500-pound bales, the smallest since 1909. All states show declines, Oklahoma shows the largest drop, and linter cotton set a record ginned at 880,780 bales. Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama account for about two thirds of output. Ellis county Texas led with 387 bales ginned, Bolivar Mississippi next with 102,858.
