Nevada County formed in 1871 from Ouachita, Columbia and Hempstead. Prescott became county seat in 1877, aided by Iron Mountain Railroad access. The article chronicles population growth from 12,948 in 1880 to 19,344 in 1910, expansion of infrastructure, schools, banks, and industry including timber, cotton, and oil mill needs.
Nevada County is the sixty fourth county created by the legislature on March 20 1871 from Hempstead Ouachita and Columbia counties. The temporary seat was Mt Moriah first permanent at Rosston later moved to Prescott in 1877. It lies in the Ouachita River Valley bordered by Clark Pike Hempstead Lafayette Columbia and Ouachita counties. The area is 575 square miles with elevation about 350 feet and prairieland comprising forty square miles. The Little Missouri River drains the county from the north.
