At about 1 AM an intruder tried to enter BE Short's home by cutting a window screen. A shot from an 88 Colt fired by E A Short scared the burglar away. The scraping of the screen woke Mr Short and Tom Wood, and the footsteps were heard by the sleeping occupants.
A public notice states Halls Texas Wonder will remove kidney bladder and rheumatic trouble. A 60 day bottle is sold for $1.00 and the drugstore is listed as Hesterly Drug Store.
Earl Hodges, clerk in the State Auditor’s office, announces candidacy for secretary of state to succeed O Ludwig. Hodges, Randolph County resident, has five years in the auditor’s office and prior newspaper experience in North Arkansas and St. Louis. He serves as secretary of both the Arkansas Jess Association and the State Printing Board. Fellow Democrats Tucker and Clary are also mentioned as pursuing the post.
In Pike County the towns Pike City and Roy killed 134 dogs last week after two rabies afflicted canines ran wild for two days. No bites were reported, but authorities ordered everyone to shoot any dog seen. All dogs in both towns, including pets, were killed and no dogs remain.
After a meeting between Senator Kia Oldham Judge Joseph M Hill and Governor Donaghey a Tuberculosis Sanitarium Board session is likely to be set early this week pending governor approval. Oldham returned from Lo noke county to confer on calling the meeting and disputed Dr Norwood on Donagheys action.
Judge J M Pittman of Prescott was elected president of the Arkansas Universalist Association at Little Rock. Officers include Rev L C Manchester as vice president and L S Smothers as treasurer. Delegates to the Detroit convention were Pittman, Manchester, Bowman, Irwin, and others. The group condemned drinking, trafficking in girls, child labor, divorce, and class legislation.
Washington reports that despite progress on the tariff bill, a final vote date remains uncertain. Many paragraphs on duties and revenue measures await decision, with no July prediction. The Senate may debate a duty on hides for a day or two before voting.
Spokane Washington and neighboring cities in Idaho and Montana plan temporary quarters for at least 150000 people for the August 9 land drawings. Daily arrivals of 500 to 750 homeseekers come to view lands as registrations run July 15 to August 5. Local chambers arrange 250 tents at Natatorium Park and promise no price increases for food or rooms.
Judge Rufus H Thayer succeeds Lebbens RR Wilfey on the United States court in Shanghai China. Appointed from Washington he has long practiced law there and enjoys high regard from the president and Wie cabinet. The post faces constant complications between Americans and Chinese and other foreigners.
Little Rock June 21 Blake's Concert Band of Arkadelphia captured first prize in the State Band Tournament held yesterday afternoon in City Park. Fordyce band took second. Citizens band Clarksville and Magnolia tied for third. Judges Armellini Cohen Kellar Baars Ricci awarded Arkadelphia unanimously.
