Interstate probe set on Hamburg America pool
The Interstate Commerce Commission will investigate an alleged ocean traffic pool linked to the Hamburg American Packet Company. The complaint, backed by Cosmopolitan Shipping of Philadelphia, accuses the foreign firm of monopoly power and coercive routing practices impacting freight between the United States interior and European ports. It cites control of east bound and west bound traffic from Chicago St Louis Kansas City Omaha Minneapolis Duluth Cleveland and other centers and alleges routes and rates are dictated to shippers nationwide. The case raises a major national and international question about restraint of trade in Baltic and European trade.
