New York reports the Arbuckles plan a vigorous appeal to Congress to remove import duties on sugar. They aim to expose high prices to customers and, if duties drop, will open a broader fight against the sugar trust. Referenced rivals Havemeyer and Arbuckle may build several large refineries.
St. Louis June 19 The Rev George Lloyd told the Presbyterian Ministers Alliance that morality has ceased to exist citing John D Rockefeller and Charles T Yerkes as examples of hypocrisy of church and state his remarks denouncing flabby morality drew attention to perceived social shifts in the era.
Heavy rains across Kansas Missouri and parts of Oklahoma flood streams near Parsons Kans La bette creek overflows for the second time this year forcing 30 families from homes. Joplin counts the heaviest rain since 1878 with over six inches, damaging crops and flooding lowlands.
Portland June 19 S A D Puter timberman arrested on a Minneapolis warrant for forging a $2430 check May 2 has produced a complete alibi. He was in Portland May 2 and did not depart for Minneapolis until May 4. Puter says he arrived in Minneapolis May 7 and consulted with Dr John T Litchfield and lawyers over timber land contests.
The fifteenth Republican convention opens in Chicago as Roosevelt and Taft camps clash over temporary delegates. Names like Elihu Root and Gov Francis McGovern appear amid charges of disorder and strategic moves by both sides. Col Roosevelt plans to direct from the Congress hotel as disputes over uncontested delegates loom.
Erie, Pa. June 19. T A Snyder a Cincinnati manufacturer and his wife on their honeymoon were killed when their auto was struck by a fast train at a Lake Shore and Michigan Southern crossing near Harbor Creek. Miss Ethel Stanton Mrs Snyder’s daughter was seriously hurt and chauffeur Harold Leet escaped with minor injuries. The bodies were terribly mutilated.
