A private report failed to spark broad buying in cotton trading today. Early declines narrowed with a late recovery, but prices finished with a net loss of 2 to 5 points for October contracts, and the market drifted easier during the session before closing steady.
Charles E. Robbins of Company E Little Rock, recently elected from Arkansas National Guard, reported to aviation school in Ithaca New York for instruction. He received transport and left by night train. After completing the course, Robbins will return to Little Rock and be ready for scout service if needed.
New York reports a fluctuating week with October contracts trading around 12.92 cents as Liverpool short covering and eased ocean freight rates narrow foreign and American gaps. Weather and crop reports mix, with cooler temperatures and persistent rains seen as undermining tap root, while export demand supports a bullish tone though selling remains limited.
In Little Rock on June 17 authorities note the Game and Fish fund in the State Treasury is a rare bright spot as market fishing resumes. Beginning June 15 a per annum license supports those who fish commercially, with daily receipts around $100 this week and into the season.
The Democratic National Convention finished its work approving the platform as Wilson outlined including Americanism and woman suffrage. The suffrage plank was narrowly passed 888.5 to 181.5 after Senator Walsh argued the President supported it. Dr Bledsoe remains head of the State Hospital in Pulaski County through June 1 after a restraining order granted by the Pulaski Chancery Court prevents the Board of Control from removing him. The Circuit Court will hear the merits of his dismissal later. The Board appointed Dr Arkebauer as interim, study of the legality of the prior contract is pending, and certiorari papers demand the case records. In a separate note, Leo Fayrot reports Arkansas negro education summer normals saw 125 attendees across Marianna Hope and Camden, a larger turnout than last year.
Herman Duhme, a Missouri resident, sues Perry County Assessor and seeks action to force property assessment at full value to raise funds for a $20 judgment. The Arkansas Tax Commission was made a party in hopes of securing reassessment of Rock Island and other railroad properties to increase annual revenue for payment.
Little Rock June 17 John M Davis state Bank Commissioner returned Saturday from Louisville Ky where he attended the annual convention of the National Association of Supervisors of State Banks Deputy J D Covey also returned Davis was re elected secretary and will next year attend the Rutland Vermont meeting to showcase Arkansas bankers he says there is Vermont money in Arkansas mortgages from strong savings banks with no bank failures in 20 years He will explain the Arkansas banking law and assure bankers that Arkansans enjoy protection similar to Vermont and that few failures have occurred since weak institutions were weeded out
