At a court house meeting Prescott residents debated forming a new telephone system. Edward Cronk of Little Rock offered a plan with stock for a 25 percent dividend and rates of 1 to 2.50 until population reached 6000, while the existing firm retained rural rates and offices. The paper notes most patrons supported a new line, with two businesses opposed and the old company’s rates preserved on rural lines.

Killed by Mail Train Near Corning
John Williams, member of the United Welfare Association, was struck and killed by Iron Mountain fast mail No. 7 at Knobel, six miles south of Corning. He lived in Derby, England, per a letter from his mother. The United Welfare Association has custody of the body awaiting orders. Also, notice of all day singing at Shady Grove Church five miles east of Prescott on Sunday June 21. Everyone invited to bring baskets.

Mediation Near End As Mexican Crisis Deepens
Justice Lamar and Frederick Lehmann, U S delegates, met Thursday in Buffalo with Rafael Zubaran and Luis Cabrera to bridge gaps with the Constitutionalists. The talks failed to align plans for an armistice or provisional presidency as mediation appears unlikely to save the conference. The next full session is set for Friday, but absence of Minister Naon and waning hope have many predicting the end of the mediation effort.

Chinch Bugs Hit Corn Fields In Arkansas County
E Ritter of Marked Tree reports chinch bugs are damaging corn near Little Rock. Commissioner Page advised burning infested lands and rubbish to destroy bug habitats. Barriers, deep furrows, plowing and harrowing can destroy migrating bugs. A narrow grain strip around fields should be sown and turned under as soon as infestation occurs.

John Hoffman Pardoned by Governor Yesterday
Little Rock June 17. The governor granted a pardon to John Hoffman Jr of Prescott after a 1913 murder conviction for manslaughter. The pardon carries a condition that any future intoxication will send him back to prison to complete the term. Hoffman, a cripple with a wife and one child, stabbed and killed Sam Cross during a drunken July 4, 1913 incident aboard a Prescott train crew.
