Mrs Pickett arrives this morning to address Prescott Chautauqua guests at the City Park tent. Confederate Veterans and local committees from Camp Asa A Morgan and Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy will attend as guests of the guarantors. Special arrangements have been made for Old Soldiers to ensure their comfort and they will hear her remarks.
Walter Adair, colored, was jailed by Sheriff Munn for killing Tom Jeenes near Delta Monday. Adair shot Jeenes in the forehead with a BR calier automatic revolver, killing him instantly. An inquest by Justice of the Peace Karl Mann found Adair for the grand jury to convene on Mon July 10. Adair was brought to the jail this afternoon and will face manslaughter charges. The trouble over Adairs wife sparked the shooting.
The first session of the party convention heard former Gov. Glynn of New York as temporary chairman present a case for Americanism peace and preparedness. delegates cheered as Glynn cited past presidents who avoided war by negotiation and endorsed Wilson’s peace policy and national restraint. The keynote drew intense emotion and calls to repeat lines as the Coliseum of about 12,000 filled with rising heat and enthusiasm.
Washington notes flag day closings as Mexican unrest grows from de facto government financial default and crowding aid shortages. Army leaders fear a collapse could provoke an uncoordinated move against U S troops pursuing Villa. A note to Carranza will demand clear cooperation and outline U S withdrawal terms.
