Pardons Granted in Nevada County Murder Case

Acting Governor Moncrief pardons Henry and Joe McCain, Nevada county murderers serving seven year terms in Arkansas penitentiary. The brothers were involved in the Slagle shooting, Joe pleaded to manslaughter, Henry convicted of murder. A large petition led by C. R. Andrews and signed by Prescott ministers supported clemency. The cases drew bitter contest in Nevada county circuit court.

Labor officials locate a utopian Arcadia in Crossett Arkansas where Crossett Lumber Company offers workers 2.75 to 5 dollars daily plus housing at 4 50 to 6 dollars monthly. Little Rock June 13 State Labor Commissioner Ben D Brickhouse has cited all hotel and restaurant men of Little Rock to appear June 20 and report on hours women employees work daily. The minimum wage commission will also judge wages. Some establishments allegedly exceed the nine hour day.

Two Norwegian Ships Sunk Off Our Coast

New York article reports two Norwegian steamships Vindeggen and Henrik Lund sunk by a German submarine about 40 miles east of Cape Charles Virginia last Saturday and Monday. The series of U boat sinkings reaches 18 vessels with crews totaling 68 men.

Saw Mills of State Buy Motor Trucks

Little Rock June 13 The saw mills of Arkansas are buying motor trucks in large numbers as a money saver. Frank Reed, a distributor of federal trucks, says sales have reached one or more per day. Mills like Waldo Gillette and Cotton Plant have taken two additional trucks. He predicts tractors will dominate farming after the war, making live stock less economical.

Bank Robbers Net $6000 From Malvern Bank

Malvern scene as First National Bank is robbed of about $6000 by two men described as Italian working men around 30. They forced cashiers and a clerk to surrender, emptied a sack, and fled in a car toward Military Road. County and sheriff deputies pursue. lookout suspect arrested but not believed. A repeat robbery in 1916 had smaller losses.

Arkansas has least fire loss in nation, report says

Little Rock June 13 The State Insurance Commissioner report shows Arkansas had the smallest fire loss last year relative to premiums paid among all states. It cites 14 802 256 dollars in total fire insurance receipts and 7 601 642 dollars paid out. The department has no power to fix rates.
