Nomination Speeches Start at Republican Convention

At the Chicago Coliseum the Republican National Convention began nominating presidents at 9 am. General Leonard Wood drew a 40 minute ovation and Governor Lowden of Illinois received a lengthy reception after Arkansas waived on the roll call. Delegations will continue presenting nominations, with the session likely continuing through the night.

McRae Opens Campaign Headquarters in Little Rock

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Thomas C. McRae opened his campaign headquarters at 128 West Markham Street above the American Cafe near Hotel Marion. Prescott attorney W. W. Tompkins will run the office, with McRae’s sons Duncan L. and Thomas C. Jr. joining. McRae will speak at Forest Park today at a Pulaski County League of Women Voters barbecue and will campaign across the state thereafter.

Arkansans Attend Annual Library Conference

Beatrice Pratt librarian of the Little Rock public library and Pearl Williamson of DeQueen attend the forty second annual conference of the American Library Association in Colorado Springs from June 2 to 7. The meeting centers on the Books for Everybody movement to build public support for libraries.

Sugar Rationing to Hit Hotels and Restaurants Nationwidely

New York June 10 sugar rationing will take effect in all hotels and restaurants on June 21. Armin W. Riley special assistant to Attorney General Palmer announced after a conference with leaders of New York hotels and restaurants who pledged to reduce sugar use due to shortage.

Powers Funeral Held Thursday

Funeral services for Karl T. Powers, who died in Spokane Monday night, were held at the Methodist church at 2 o clock yesterday with Rev. E. Smith officiating. Burial was in Whitefish Cemetery. Powers, born October 1, 1869 in Kirksville Maine, married Anna Hach September 26, 1907 in Memphis Tennessee. He served as yardmaster for the Great Northern in Whitefish from February 1917 to October 1918 and later worked in local yards until ill health in December. He left six children, five living.
