Six Phillips county murder convicts face stay ruling

On June 10 six men convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death faced new legal fighting as petitions for writs of prohibition and habeas corpus were filed. The Arkansas Supreme Court deferred action until Monday as counsel sought to restrain the penitentiary and questioned circuit court authority over criminal law enforcement. Governor McRae noted execution orders stand but judicial departments will decide next steps.

Governor appoints McLendon to Third District School board

Special from Little Rock reports Governor McRae named R H McLendon of Atlanta Columbia county as a new trustee to replace R S Warnock of Magnolia. Warnock has served in state positions and may have not taken oath, with attorney general ruling on file status noted. Three more appointments expected.

Largest class in history of normal graduates

Governor McRae and State Supt. J L Bond attended the 13th annual commencement at the State Normal in Conway. A class of 58 graduates marked the largest in the institution’s history, with a higher proportion of men than usual. The governor delivered the principal address.

Hearing on Gas Co petition set for June 14 in Little Rock

The Arkansas Railroad Commission announces a June 14 hearing in Little Rock on the Arkansas Natural Gas Company rate increase petition. A separate Memphis rate case will be heard June 20 before the Interstate Commerce Commission in Memphis. The notice includes an unrelated ad for Prickly Ash Bitters priced at $1.25 from Hesterly Drug Store.

Wage hearing ends with call for peace in railroad disputes

Chicago June 9 The second wage reduction hearing before the United States labor board ended in a tone of cooperation as railroad representatives and employes urged peace. F. W. Sargent of Chicago & Northwestern urged settlement for the good of the nation while stressing a lenient view on the eight hour day. The Pullman Company dispute remains unresolved with a decision due tomorrow. The session also reviewed how the April 4 decision on national agreements should be applied, indicating the old rules may continue or new ones be forged.

Refused injunction against prosecutor in Blue Sky case

Little Rock on June 10 the State bank commissioner was advised that Chancellor Stevens at El Dorado refused to grant an injunction against Prosecuting Attorney Pope to restrain him from prosecuting companies or agents selling shares of stock issued by a common law trust unauthorized by the Blue Sky Department. Petitioners contended they were not subject to the department's regulations.

Oil Fields Offer Puzzle to Tax Commission

The Arkansas Tax Commission and county assessors face a major problem in valuing oil properties. A commission member will visit the Eldorado oil field to discuss fair assessment methods for producing wells leases and unproved lands. The challenge is aligning speculative values with actual surface values across varied property types.

Truck Shipping Expands as L H Thomas Boosts Fruit Trade

L H Thomas, Prescott based fruit and vegetable jobber, plans to ship about 450 car loads this season including tomatoes cantaloupes sweet corn watermelons blackberries beans and cucumbers to eastern and northern markets. Operations extend across Prescott Gordon Hope Dunlap Blevins Arcadia Shady Grove and Deanyville with shipments moving from Dunlap Arcadia and Prescott via Prescott Northwestern to Missouri Pacific for distribution. Growers are paid by check immediately upon unloading signaling a new era of prosperity as truck farming overtakes cotton locally.
