London reports say unemployment in Britain topped six million as 500000 jobless cotton operatives joined the ranks and wage reductions loom. Coal miners, about 1.25 million, endure 60 days of no pay while hunger fears rise and government funds dwindle.
The East End faces hunger while the West End shines with pageantry. Buckingham Palace hosts daily scarlet and gold displays, royal levees, and grand military shows to celebrate the king's birthday.
