Famed Mississippi Doctor and Wife Slain in Bond Home

Bond Mississippi reports the shooting death of Dr B Hood prominent physician of the area and seriously injuring Mrs H Spring at her home. Hood, a World War I veteran, died of a heart wound. Spring's wife died minutes later after two gunshots. No witnesses identified. motive unknown. Hood is survived by a wife and two children. Spring is childless.

Faulkner County Forgery Convict Commutes Sentence

Little Rock June 5 Gov Brough commuted Wesley Simson a Faulkner county youth from a two year term on forgery to eleven months. He forged a $30 check and many citizens including the cashier urged clemency. The Stars and Stripes note origin on the French front now in the Capitol. Get a copy from Johnson dealer.

National Board Reaches Talks Over Arkansas Insurance Rates

Representatives of the National Board of Underwriters met Brice Bullion in Little Rock to discuss a 6.21 percent rate reduction ordered for Arkansas fire insurance. The 1919 act limits state profits to 5 percent based on five year averages, but the department cites 11.21 percent earnings. Insurers dispute the method, arguing expenses and paid liabilities misstate earnings. a court challenge is expected with similar laws in four other states.

Fayetteville June 5 Lieut Col Armistead awarded commissions to 12 officers of the University of Arkansas ROTC corps. Recipients include battalion commander James E Rutherford Malvern and several company commanders from Fayetteville Springdale and Little Rock. Officers reviewed with Col Armistead Capt Halpin Com mandant and President Futrall present.

Brough Delivers Addresses in Memphis and Georgia

Governor spoke to Crockett Vocational High School graduates in Memphis and planned literary address at Mercer University Macon on June 18. He also attended Fayetteville Board of Trustees meeting and delivered an address to the large twelve year Normal School class, praising students as intelligent, cultured and patriotic while noting the flourishing Normal under President B Torreyson and a new $110 000 administration building. Tyler Commercial College offers Byrne shorthand system with scholarships available.

Washington reports the 1920 census will announce New York City population figures along with Boston. Estimates suggest New York City proper around 6.1 million and metropolitan New York about 8.2 million, with London’s figures awaiting its 1921 release.
