Washington June 3. The senate judiciary sub committee opened hearings into a powerful lobbying network tied to tariff and other pending legislation. The panel plans to grill all 96 senators, questioning their votes and influence attempts with a 15 minute limit per senator, as sessions run late each night. Senators Ashurst Bacon Bankhead and Borah were first called.
The White House says President Wilson offered no specific suggestions to Senators Overman and Reed during a long conference. Ashurst and Bacon testified about lobbying efforts and named individuals, including William Kettner and J P McMurray, stressing that only improper pressure is deemed lobbying while defending the rights of citizens to discuss matters with their representatives.
The Interstate Commerce Commission will investigate the St Louis and San Francisco railroad receivership. Officials cite heavy expenditures and high valuations of feeders as factors in the road’s embarrassment. The probe will cover fiscal transactions and may lead to prosecutions, with a public report to be issued.
Washington June 3 the customs court of appeals affirms a board ruling and holds Treasury Secretary MacVeagh responsible for duty remittance on creosote imports. The decision questions personal liability for duties evaded prior to last year and potential entries to be reopened. Payne Aldrich Act of 1909 and railroads’ interests drive the dispute over creosote oil duty.
Miss Angelina Echefer, 20, died in Chicago after a false tooth loosened while she laughed at a story told by her fiancé Albert Hodofer. The incident occurred on June 8.
