Thumb prints replace witnesses in Spokane treaty payments

In Spokane Washington on June 3 thumb prints of Indians on the Spokane and Colville reservations are used to identify recipients for government treaty payments. Over $1,000,000 sits in the San Francisco subtreasury to Capt John McA Webster who confirms the shift from witness marks to thumb prints. Missouri Drummers Conclude Three Day Session in Jefferson City

Four hundred drummers gathered in Jefferson City for a three day session featuring a band concert. Mayor Thomas welcomed them and John C. Griffin of Kansas City spoke in response. They visited the penitentiary for a concert and luncheon hosted by Warden Andrae. The Commercial Club chauffeured them to the Country Club for further entertainment and a Mardi Gras parade.

First Lynching in Memphis in Over Thirty Years

A mob of about 50 mounted men overpowered deputy sheriffs and lynched Pat Crump in Memphis on June 3. He was dragged along streets, hanged from an oak, and shot while cries echoed blocks away. The event, the city’s first lynching in 20 years, followed a failed attempt to attack Mrs. H L Whitsington.

Many Drop on Hike in Mills Brigade at Galveston

In Galveston Texas under 97 degree heat Gen A L Mills brigade troops on the mainland endured a grueling hike. By noon ambulances and wagons were filled with exhausted men one eighth of the brigade reportedly knocked out. The unit finished the last lap to Harrisburg for a 24 hour rest with a possibility of return if rain comes. Soldiers complained officers sought to make a record at the men’s expense on white shell roads increasing heat stress.

Evansville Youth Fatally Injured by Mowing Machine

In Evansville Indiana George J Rheinhardt aged 15 was driving a mowing machine when it struck a stump. The machine threw him from the seat and he was cut to pieces by the blades. His father found him dead at the scene.
