Supreme Court Rules Federal Judges Do Not Pay Income Tax

The court, in a seven to two decision, held that provisions of the revenue act requiring federal judges to pay tax on their salaries were unconstitutional. Justice Jee Van de Vanter wrote for the majority, ruling salaries cannot be diminished or taxed as private income and that war-era limits apply.

Washington June 1 Congress moves to adjourn sine die by 4 p m Saturday after a brief debate as both chambers approve speed up measures. The vote count was 129 to 52 in the House with no record tally and Republicans and Democrats debate President Wilson’s possible response. Mondell says by Saturday Congress will have disposed of every important business.

Mrs H G Barham Dies At 71 In Ashdown

Mrs H G Barham aged 71 died at her daughter Mrs Mattie Whitley’s home in Ashdown. Funeral services and interment will be held tomorrow at Harmony Cemetery at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev W C Felts. The body will arrive in Prescott today from Ashdown. She is survived by ten children several of whom live in Texas and Oklahoma.

Surprise secret wedding ties Duke to Sullivan in Prescott

Miss Artie Duke daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Duke and J Edward Sullivan Jr both of Prescott were married last Monday night at Salem church southeast of Prescott. Rev C P Walters officiated. The couple left for a brief wedding trip to Little Rock on Missouri Pacific train number six and will reside after June 5 at Mrs J E Daniels home.

Demand causes of gasoline advance

Washington reports by the federal trade commission attribute recent gasoline and petroleum price increases mainly to strong demand and improved production and imports. The commission cannot determine if refined product prices are disproportionate to crude oil rises or report current year profits for large oil companies.
