Plan for training war army revised in 1917 cantonments plan
Washington reports major revisions to the War Department plan for mobilizing the draft army. The half million troops to be called in September will be concentrated in 16 cantonments instead of 32, with tents likely used at southern camps due to shortages of funds, materials, labor, and transportation. Four sites have been chosen: Atlanta, American Lake, Wrightstown New Jersey and Ayre Massachusetts. Extra troops beyond cantonment capacity would be housed under canvas. The change should not delay mobilization or alter the plan for 16 guard divisions while draft selections proceed.
