The News launches a seven district popularity contest offering grand and district prizes. Crowds of hustlers tour Prescott and surrounding townships to recruit new subscribers, with 20 more hunters welcome. Geo Hornbeck of the military company living near Ward’s Chapel was held up and robbed of 9.50 after leaving a company meeting. Two men flanked him and forced payment, threatening violence, as he rode toward Mrs Shanks’s home. The event follows a recent burglary at Mrs Dillon’s home where money was taken.
W F Kirby declares only poll tax payers are qualified electors despite the U S Circuit Court in Arkansas ruling the qualification clause invalid. He says the court’s interpretation of the state constitution is not binding here and the flaw remains enforceable until the state supreme court rules otherwise.
Mrs. Athalla L. J. Irwin will leave the pastorate September 1 and move to Canton New York to begin a three year course at St. Lawrence University. A successor has not yet been chosen.

Col GA Deane of the Iron Mountain land office received a telegram this morning announcing the sudden death of Henry C Townsend at Port Huron Michigan. The news came as a shock after a letter from Townsend last Monday indicating he was in good health.
