The Parleton post office safe was blown open around 2 AM. About $225 in small denominations was stolen with nitro caps used to blow the lock. Suspects escaped, little chance of capture, money scattered along the railroad toward Mort Smith. some authorities note ticket agents’ low pay may spur reforms.
Major Timson of the Sixteenth Infantry met Adjutant General Paul Little to discuss the upcoming guard inspection. Timson begins travel on March 5. Major L. P. Berry completed the preliminary inspection after mustering out a Jonesboro company for lack of men, while other units across the state maintain full enlistments.
A general office order places auditors under control and requires passengers to use paid tickets. The rule ends fare reductions for round trips and long journeys, eliminating prior savings. Ticket practice of boarding with no ticket led to revenue issues and line-wide changes. Station salaries were reduced as the business declined.
Arkansas reports several new ventures announced in the past week. Hot Springs plans a 100000 medicine factory, Port Smith a 50000 development company, Pine Bluff a 100000 lumber mills project, plus Alonza Telephone company. Citty's offers a full line of ties from wide to long.
State Auditor Avery E. Moore aims to collect liquor license payments in the coming week to avert a deficiency in the general revenue fund. County collectors were urged to remit promptly. none have been paid so far. About $100,000 is expected this year, just under last year’s total.
A. O. Hill of Nashville Arkansas reports ants destroying boll weevils in a cotton field. He writes to Commissioner Tucker detailing experiments where a large ant colony protected cotton from weevils with no plant damage. Hill urges a government scale test, claiming ants are the pest’s sworn enemy and the sole solution.
Little Rock Southern League base team will start spring drills March 15 at West End Park. Mike Finn says the roster includes seven holdovers from 1907 with strong new timber. The article notes rival clubs, local postal route news, Knights of Pythias visit, and a tease about inexpensive shirts at Citty’s.
Presiding Elder Ware will lead the Prescott Methodist Church in the first quarterly conference tonight at 7 30 in the chapel. All officers are required to be present. T. D. Scorr.
Father Leo Heinrichs was killed at St Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Denver while administering early morning mass. Giuseppe Guarniccio pressed a revolver to the priest's chest after receiving holy water, then fled the altar area and was seized by Patrolman Daniel Cronin after a struggle.
The remains of Mr and Mrs Tom Davis's 11 year old daughter were brought by No 5 and buried at Artesian cemetery five miles east this afternoon. She died last night at 12 from appendicitis. Mrs Davis was formerly Miss Cham Bliss. Gurdon friends I W Haynie M T Davis and Rev Steele accompanied the funeral entourage.
