Merchants Back Cotton Effort Against Boll Weevil
J. J. Moore, U S department of agriculture agent, urged the Retail Merchants Association to mobilize support for resisting the boll weevil. He warned Nevada County could lose 75 percent of its cotton crop in 1909 without action and urged broad citizen help. The group voted to order a carload of improved seed at cost, with H. T. Ingram distributing seed free of charge. Moore noted local adopters Kelley, Griffis, and Trible praised the seed, and he urged farmers to Prescott next Saturday to hear instructions at the courthouse.

Texarkana Fire Destroys A L Ghio Block And Two Homes
Fire at 2 a m yesterday gutted the A L Ghio brick block on Front and State opposite the Cotton Belt depot. Losses include Ghio 8000 building 4000 insurance, Sterling 6000 stock 3000, Britt Allen 5000 fixtures and liquors 2950 insurance, McGraw 400 furniture 200, Levy 1000 5000, and two North Olive street houses owned by Mrs. Barry valued 1000 each with 700 insurance. Levy also lost most household goods worth 1200 insured 800. J M Miller family lost about 1000 goods. Miller insured 500. Fire started in McGraw restaurant flue.
