Ben Pittman, renowned for promoting a phonography system that bears his name and a pioneer of shorthand in America, died at his Cincinnati residence aged 89 after a year of illness. Born July 24, 1822 in Trawbridge England, he arrived in the United States in January 18.
Dispatches from Brigus Newfoundland reported to Herbert Bridgman of the Peary Athletic Club raise fears for the schooner Jeanie. Unheard for months, she may be lost or frozen in Labrador or Hudson Bay after 1909 Arctic voyage funded by friends of Harry Whitney. The vessel is owned by Bridgman and Captain Bartlett, Peary’s ship.
Charles Hebiden deputy sheriff of Salina County Mo was kidnapped by five men in a Sedalia rooming house held for 14 hours during which he was beaten and robbed of a draft for 1000. His skull was fractured and his condition is critical. He escaped when left unguarded. captors fled and police have not found the men.
Miss Dorce Dewitt daughter of Col and Mrs Theodore Dewitt long based in New York married Jefferson Hayes Davis son of President Joel Addison Hayes of the First National Bank at St Stephen's Episcopal Church. Davis is grandson of Margaret Howell Jefferson Davis Hayes daughter of Jefferson Davis.
Reginald Frank Doherty world class tennis star dies in London on December 30. He and his brother H. L. Doherty were champions in doubles, part of a renowned duo.
Washington readers learn of Representative Longworth Ohio bill to create a permanent tariff commission of five members with salaries 7500 and offices in Washington. It empowers data collection, allows confidential data but not disclosure, and reports only on call. Commissioners will be appointed by the president for staggered terms and serve six-year terms thereafter.
Independence Kansas reports Claude Stafford a 19 year old from Peru shot in Talala Oklahoma by the town marshal. Despite five square inches of skull missing and brain loss he is conscious and converses intelligently in the hospital.
Reports from New Orleans state a revolution has begun in Honduras with a battle near the Nicaraguan border. Gen Leo Christmas, an American, commands 1 400 revolutionists seeking provisions for a month. The Honduran navy moves 50 000 from Puerto Cortes to Ceiba while 3 000 troops march on the capital. Armies clash near Cape Gracias as Dayila's forces resist. On the border, a Dominican army faces a Haitian force with no immediate fighting expected. Spokane adopts the commission form of city government by a large margin, with many women registered but few voting.
Pittsfield Mars December reports fourteen men killed and eighteen injured when boilers exploded at the Morewood ice plant. The blast shattered the complex and rocked nearby houses. Engineer William Dunn was among the dead. Ambulances rushed to Mercy hospital as survivors recalled the thunderous crash and wreckage. An investigation began immediately.
A mysterious fire gutted the dormitory of Kirkwood Military Academy in Kirkwood Missouri. Professor Edward A Haight who has led the institution for 26 years lived with his wife in the building at the time, all cadets away for holidays. The brick dormitory valued at about six thousand dollars was destroyed with hopes to rebuild soon.
