New York December 22 The cotton market opened with a sharp early rally followed by heavy selling. March contracts fell from 16.75¢ to 16.20¢ then closed at 16.89¢. January traded weak and Liverpool linked selling pressured prices, with January down to 15.90¢ before some late recoveries.
South Side Terminal Railway Co of Fort Smith is chartered to construct a railway line in South Fort Smith linking Iron Mountain Frisco Fort Smith and Western and Kansas City Southern. Capital stock is $50,000 with directors H. S. Buck E. F. Gutenson George Kelts W. E. Deckerm and Samuel P. Sturgis.
Prayer and song selections lead the Presbyterian Church program at 7 p.m. featuring Oh Who is Jesus, Little Bells of Gladness and Joy to the World. Recitations and dialogues by listed participants present a Christmas themed program.
The First Presbyterian Church invites the public to a Christmas tree program with songs and speeches by young people. Sunday includes Sunday school at 10 a.m. led by Duncan L. Little Rock Dec. 28 Thirty three inmates of the state penitentiary were granted Christmas pardons by Gov. Hays. The list includes six men serving twenty one year sentences for murder and several others with shorter terms for lesser offenses. Names span Jefferson, Greene, Pulaski and other counties with multiple John Pinkertons noted as distinct individuals.
In Little Rock on December 23 a notable act of loyalty surfaced within the Arkansas National Guard. F. B. Smith, former secretary to J. W. Dean, serves as sergeant-major of the 1st Regiment, earning 45 dollars monthly. He swapped posts to remain sergeant-major until a second lieutenancy opens, while Harry Smith is assigned to Company D in his stead. W. A. Smith, an auto industry figure, is tapped by Mayor C. B. Taylor to raise funds to buy medals for Arkansas troops returning home, via a fund started by Maj. Fredeman.
In Massillon Ohio on December 22 President Wilson autographed a letter endorsing a newspaper church advertising campaign run by the Massillon Chamber of Commerce. He said the effort to quicken the church going habit meets his warmest sympathy and that it underpins steadfast character and life standards. Johnsons Jacobs and Elmers offer plain and fancy holiday chocolate packages at Hesterly Drug Store.
