Early Sunday morning a fire destroyed the Bell residence at West Elm and Second Streets. Occupants W H Jones and family saved little, with Bell having limited insurance. The landmark building, one of Prescott’s first, dated to the 1880s when built by R L Moore.
Adjutant General Loyd England securing a War Department agreement yields 65000 dollars for Arkansas National Guard use with 24000 dollars to be held by the government until July. Donations from state business leaders will cover additional guard expenses not funded by the government. Local ads referenced are incidental.
Sumner A. Cunningham longtime Confederate Veteran editor and proprietor died at a Nashville hospital from nose hemorrhages at age 70 funeral planned Sunday burial in Shelbyville beside family members including a son who drowned in 1901 while surveying the US Mexico boundary honorary pallbearers Gen Bennett H Young Gen Virgil Y Cook and Gen John P Hickman will attend the service. Little Rock has the News: The Little Rock Press Club entertainment committee plans an elaborate dinner at the New Capitol Hotel on December 31 with Gov. G. W. Hays Judge W. M. Kavanaugh and Horace Mitchell as honor guests. They will become honorary members under club rules. A belated Christmas tree and old fashioned games will foster fellowship. The club also schedules a luncheon every two weeks.
A burglar broke in at about 2 a.m. through a rear door by glass and tore a window screen to enter. The thief rifled the cash drawer, estimated around $5, and this is the second robbery at the store. Officers conduct a thorough investigation and expect to apprehend the burglar.
Little Rock hosts Gov. Craig of North Carolina on his Hot Springs journey, with Gov. Hays Mayor Charles E. Taylor and Sec. Gee R. Brown inviting him to visit Little Rock before returning to Raleigh.
Little Rock Dec 22 It is probable that at the next session of the State Legislature there will be an effort to change the management of state penitentiary institutions to place them under a three member board that will remain in session continuously. The plan mirrors the penitentiary system and is argued to save money by allowing close scrutiny and more economical operation. Currently the institutions are overseen by a board that meets monthly and changes with each governor, forcing new members to repeatedly cover the same ground.
Little Rock Dec 22 It is expected that the appointment of U S Marshall for the Eastern District of Arkansas will be made early in the spring when the term of H L Remmel expires. Two men remain in consideration Floyd Walker former sheriff Ashley county and Henry Traylor Conway. Friends of both candidates are active in their behalf. Do not forget the dates of the county road convention December 30 and 31.
Frank Harper, driller and stock holder in the Hempstead Oil and Gas Company, said in town they expect to strike oil within 150 feet of drilling. The firm has been drilling near Blevins for two months on the first well, already yielding small oil quantities with a larger vein anticipated. Hempstead Oil and Gas, capital $10,000, plans additional wells near Blevins and holds options on thousands of acres along the Prescott and Northwestern railroad, with experts predicting oil there.
