French machine gunner George Van Kemmel is named Military Medal recipient and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for solo actions on the Vauclere plateau. He crawled from shell holes to within fifteen yards of a German machine gun, killed the gunner with a grenade, knocked out the weapon, bayonetted a foe, and helped seize the blockhouse during the offensive. Four months later he again led the assault in the first wave.

St Louis man Gustav Keyne or Heyne, aged 41, returns with a fortune of about $100,000 from Klondike mines after sixteen years. He left in 1901 with little money, went with another St Louis companion, and traveled 150 miles by dog sled to Dawson City. Prospecting yielded rich mineral deposits. a Willowere lode paid $275,000 in two years and another $100,000 since his return.
